The evolution of the sting apparatus in myrmicine ants is analyzed, with a survey of 96 species representing 63 genera and 18 tribes. The morphology of the hymenopteran ovipositor and its descendant, the sting apparatus, reflects major adaptive radiations within the order. The study examines the taxonomic value and evolutionary significance of the sting apparatus, presenting an hypothesis of the phylogeny of the subfamily and attempting to show how the radiation of these ants is reflected in sting apparatus morphology. The results are based on detailed examinations of the sting apparatuses, which were dissected into separate sclerites and mounted for viewing under a microscope. Each apparatus was scanned for 43 tabular characters, and external morphology was consulted to check the feasibility of relationships suggested by the sting apparatus. The study proposes a phylogeny of the Myrmicinae based on the sting apparatus, with a representative sting shown for each genus or cluster of related genera.
