Summary

The kinetics of adsorption of methylene blue onto activated carbon prepared from palm kernel shell was investigated. The adsorption process follows the pseudo-second order kinetic model, with a correlation coefficient between 0.98 and 1. The pseudo-second order rate constant decreased with increasing initial concentration, but increased with temperature, indicating an endothermic process. Intra-particle diffusion was confirmed as a rate-determining step, suggesting that the adsorption mechanism is controlled by particle diffusion rather than film diffusion. The optimum contact time for adsorption was 50 minutes, and the optimum initial concentration was 20 ppm. The percentage removal of methylene blue decreased with increasing initial concentration, attributed to a lack of available active sites.
