Summary

This position paper investigates automated text anonymisation, a prerequisite for secure sharing of documents containing sensitive information about individuals. The authors review current approaches, which have been developed in two fields with little mutual interaction: natural language processing (NLP) and privacy-preserving data publishing (PPDP). NLP approaches rely on sequence labelling to detect and remove predefined categories of entities, while PPDP approaches anonymise text by enforcing a privacy model. The authors argue that neither approach provides a fully satisfactory account of the text anonymisation problem and discuss three open challenges: ensuring anonymisation is robust against multiple types of semantic inferences, transforming text to minimise disclosure risk while retaining semantic content, and evaluating the quality of the resulting anonymisation. They propose that future anonymisation approaches should combine a data-driven editor model with an adversary seeking to infer confidential attributes from edited documents.
