Summary

Bartenwale mit Zähnen unterscheiden sich von Zahnwalen durch ihre fransigen Hornlamellen (Barten) im Oberkiefer, während Zahnwale Zähne im Maul tragen. Embryos von Bartenwalen besitzen jedoch Zahnanlagen, die darauf hindeuten, dass Bartenwale von zahntragenden Vorfahren abstammen. Die Entstehung der Bartenwale ist eng mit der Veränderung der Meeresströmungen und der Bildung von Packeis in der Antarktis verbunden. Im Oligozän gab es drei verschiedene Erscheinungstypen von Bartenwalen: mit Zähnen, aber ohne Barten, mit Zähnen und Barten und ohne Zähne, nur mit Barten. Die Zähne früher Bartenwale ähneln an diejenigen ihrer Vorfahren, der Urwale. Einige Fossilien, wie Kekenodon und Phococetus, wurden zunächst verschiedenen Wal-Unterordnungen zugeordnet, bevor sie als bezahnte Bartenwale identifiziert wurden. Llanocetus denticrenatus, ein 34 Millionen Jahre altes Fossil aus der Antarktis, gilt als einer der ältesten bekannten Bartenwale und besitzt bereits Anzeichen von Barten und einer Anpassung an die Filternahrung.
