Summary

The thermal and thermo-oxidation stability of plasticized fiber-filled composite materials based on polyphenylene sulfone (PPSF) was studied. The composites contained 30% carbon (CF) or glass (GF) fibers and various amounts of plasticizer. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the temperature of the onset of mass loss in air ranged from 480 to 540°C, decreasing with increasing plasticizer content. Composites with CF were more heat-resistant than those with GF. Gas chromatography revealed that composites with GF absorbed more oxygen than CF-filled composites, with minimal effect from plasticizer content. Hydrogen evolution was higher for GF-filled composites, associated with structuring processes involving terminal hydroxyl groups. The results indicate that plasticization decreases the heat resistance of PPSF composites, with CF-filled composites being more stable than GF-filled ones.
