Multiple quantum NMR study of correlation of two methyl groups by J. Tang and A. Pines. Molecules with rotating groups may show coupled motions, and traditional single quantum NMR may yield complicated spectra. Multiple quantum (MQ) NMR can provide analyzable spectra and has been used to study conformation and correlated relaxation. The study reports preliminary results on the correlation of two methyl groups using MQ NMR, distinguishing between uncorrelated and correlated motion. The extent of correlated motion is determined by the potential barrier and temperature, and the lifetime of correlation can be classified into three categories. The four-quantum spectrum is sensitive to two-body correlations and can distinguish between uncorrelated and correlated motion. An example is presented using 2,3-dimethylmaleic anhydride, showing that the two methyl groups rotate independently within the defined time scale.
