Summary

Numerical investigation of a jet-and-vortex-actuator without and with cross-flow boundary layer is presented. The actuator, first investigated experimentally by Lachowicz et al., consists of a cavity and a rigid plate with narrow and wide gaps. The plate is oscillated vertically, producing different flow fields depending on actuation parameters. The vortex mode of operation is considered, and three cases are presented: one without cross-flow and two with a cross-flow boundary layer. The results show that the actuator increases the wall-normal velocity gradient by redistributing momentum within the boundary layer, especially when the wide gap is behind the small gap and the moving actuator plate. The Fluent CFD software is used for simulations, and the results are compared to experimental data, showing good agreement.
