Summary

Researchers used scanning tunneling spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to study the surface of Bi2Se3, a topological insulator, after doping it with trace amounts of iron or cesium. They found that the doping induced a long-range periodic modulation of the electronic structure, manifesting as a two-dimensional commensurate superlattice with stripes running parallel to the surface lattice vectors. This electronic modulation coexisted with the topological surface state, and the researchers suggest that the stripe states are related to the bulk properties of Bi2Se3, induced by the impurities residing in substitutional sites or in the van-der-Waals gap. The results may provide new strategies for engineering the electronic and thermoelectric properties of topological insulators.
