Summary

The South American tomato leafminer (Tuta absoluta) is a devastating pest of tomatoes, causing crop losses of 80-100% in areas where it is found. It bores into leaves, stems, flowers, and fruit, making the fruit unmarketable and altering plant growth. The insect spreads through commercial trade and private movement of infested plants and fruit. It is currently found in South America, Panama, Costa Rica, southern Europe, North Africa, and West Asia, and is projected to establish in California, posing a serious threat to tomato production. The leafminer's life cycle consists of egg, larval, and pupal stages, with the adult moths laying eggs on plant parts and the larvae feeding on plant tissue. The insect can be identified by its small, silvery-brown moths, yellow eggs, and cylindrical larvae with distinct heads and legs. Damage to tomato plants includes leaf mining, stem boring, and fruit damage, with the larvae penetrating plant tissue and feeding on it. Monitoring, identification, and reporting of the pest can help slow its spread into California.
