Paulownia tomentosa x fortunei hybrid plants were exposed to different concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Zn to study their effects on photosynthetic and antioxidant parameters. The maximum accumulation of heavy metals occurred in the roots. Treatments caused significant reduction in total plant dry biomass, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and water use efficiency, but increased net photosynthetic rate. Lipid peroxidation and H2O2 concentration increased at higher concentrations of Pb and Zn, indicating oxidative stress. Antioxidant enzymes, such as ascorbate peroxidase and catalase, were stimulated, and glutathione and flavonoids levels increased. The results suggest that Paulownia tomentosa x fortunei hybrid has potential for phytoremediation of contaminated soils due to its high biomass productivity and ability to tolerate heavy metals.
