PhyloCode.pdf

Phylogenetic nomenclature, as embodied in the PhyloCode, is designed to name clades by explicit reference to phylogeny, and its implementation is anticipated within a few years. A companion volume of phylogenetically defined names will be published, containing names and definitions of major clades, with vertebrates and vascular plants being well-represented. The authors provide phylogenetic definitions for 20 clades of vascular plants, following the draft PhyloCode, and illustrate the application of phylogenetic nomenclature in various contexts. Phylogenetic nomenclature promotes precision in distinguishing crown, apomorphy-based, and total clades, and the authors propose naming conventions to make these distinctions more transparent. The PhyloCode has advantages over the rank-based system, eliminating name changes due to shifts in rank, and making it easier to name clades without developing or changing a classification.
