Summary

The Office of the Massachusetts State Geologist assessed an unusual deposit of what appears to be pisolitic bauxite or iron hardpan exposed on the beach at Menemsha Hills Reservation in Chilmark, Massachusetts. The formation occurs as thin lenses, 10-20 cm wide and 0.5 to 6 meters long, trending northeast and dipping at 61° to 75°. Scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectral analysis suggest the material is comprised of silica, iron, aluminum, oxygen, and minor amounts of potassium, magnesium, and sodium, likely including minerals such as hematite, goethite, and clay minerals. The material does not appear to be bauxite due to its low aluminum concentration and is instead described as pisolitic ferricrete, likely formed through secondary precipitation of iron oxides due to changes in redox conditions. The age of the ferricrete formation is unknown but is thought to be post-Pleistocene.
