A Step-by-Step Guide

What is a Planisphere?

A planisphere is a handy tool for stargazers that displays a map of the night sky, showing which stars and constellations are visible at any given time. It works by rotating a star wheel to track the movement of celestial bodies across the sky.

Why Make Your Own?

Dominic Ford provides a downloadable kit (free) to create your own planisphere tailored for specific latitudes. This allows you to:

Personalize: Tailor your planisphere for your exact location on Earth.
Learn: Gain hands-on experience with celestial navigation and astronomy.
Save Money: Avoid purchasing a pre-made planisphere.

Who is it For?

This kit is designed for use at latitudes around 25° South. If you live elsewhere, download a kit suitable for your region from [in-the-sky.org/planisphere](https://in-the-sky.org/planisphere/).

What You Need:

Two sheets of A4 paper or thin card
Scissors
Split-pin fastener (or paper drill)
Optional: Transparent plastic sheet
Optional: Glue

Steps:

1. Download and Print: Download the PDF kit from [in-the-sky.org/planisphere](https://in-the-sky.org/planisphere/) and print the star wheel and planisphere body, preferably on thin card.

2. Cut Out: Carefully cut out both parts along the dotted lines. Also cut out the grey shaded area (viewing window) and any optional transparent plastic grid.

3. Punch Holes: Make a small hole in the center of both the star wheel and planisphere body using a split-pin fastener or paper drill.

4. Assemble:

Slot the split-pin fastener through the star wheel's central hole.
Attach the planisphere body to the fastener, with the printed side facing the back.
Fold the planisphere body along the dotted line to create a viewing window.

5. Optional Grid (for advanced users): If you printed the grid on transparent plastic, stick it over the viewing window.

Using Your Planisphere:

1. Set Date and Time: Turn the star wheel until the current date is aligned with the current time.

2. Face South: Hold the planisphere up to the sky facing south. The stars in the viewing window should match those directly above you.

3. Orient Properly: Rotate the planisphere to face east or west, and check that the words "East" or "West" are at the bottom of the window. The star positions should still align with the sky.

Advanced Features (Optional):

The transparent plastic grid allows you to:

Measure Altitude: Determine how high objects appear in the sky (angles from horizon).
* Determine Azimuth: Find the direction an object is located above your head (compass directions S, SSE, SE, etc.).
