Bone extractions are labor-intensive, requiring extensive preparation and designated screening areas, with most taking 12-72 hours. The RapidHIT ID system was used to test bone samples, with high-quality bones resulting in full DNA profiles for all amounts tested (10mg, 50mg, and 100mg). The system uses Intel cartridges and can process raw data for average heterozygous peak heights and sister allele balances. The study found that bone amount and consistency affect the quality of the DNA profile, with finer consistency potentially clogging the system. The RapidHIT ID system was compared to current methods, including demineralization and large volume extraction methods, and was found to be more efficient and effective. The system can be used for various applications, including reassociation of fragmented remains, disaster human identification, and rush cases. Forensic genealogy and ancestry and phenotyping were also discussed as potential uses for the RapidHIT ID system.
