The Global Methane Initiative (GMI) is a voluntary partnership aiming to reduce global methane emissions and advance the recovery and use of methane as a clean energy source. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, responsible for over a third of total anthropogenic climate forcing, with a global warming potential 21 times greater than carbon dioxide. The GMI focuses on five main methane emission sources: agriculture, coal mines, landfills, municipal wastewater, and oil and gas systems. In agriculture, methane is produced from the decomposition of livestock manure and agro-industrial wastewater, contributing an estimated 237 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MMTCO2E) in 2010. The GMI promotes the use of anaerobic digestion (AD) technology to capture and utilize methane from these sources, generating energy and reducing emissions. The initiative helps countries overcome barriers to AD deployment, such as financing, regulations, and lack of technical information, by developing strategies and providing support for project development.
