Summary

The proton radius was thought to be known with 1% accuracy, but a new method using muons instead of electrons found a radius 4% smaller with an uncertainty of 0.1%. This discrepancy, known as the proton radius puzzle, remains unresolved despite various measurements and calculations. Electronic measurements using electron-proton scattering and atomic spectroscopy agree, but the muonic measurement using the 2S-2P Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen is significantly smaller. Theoretical calculations and suggestions to resolve the conflict include anomalous QCD corrections, connections to physics beyond the standard model, and questions about the interpretation of electron-based experiments. New experiments are underway to check aspects of the conflict, but the problem remains unsolved.
