Summary

Pruning sweet and tart cherries immediately after harvest helps prevent bacterial canker, a serious disease in humid climates. Pruning in summer, rather than dormant pruning, lessens the chance of infection. Infected branches should be cut back to 6-8 inch stubs to prevent the canker from entering the trunk. Bacterial canker is caused by Pseudomonas bacteria and can kill new spurs and leaves, and move into the trunk. Control measures include summer pruning and repeated applications of Bordeaux mixture in September, October, and November, and again in the spring.
