Summary

Ceramic Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) are being developed for the Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment's Time-of-Flight wall, which requires a time resolution better than 80 ps and can withstand high fluxes of up to 20×10^3 cm^-2 s^-1. Researchers at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf have built RPC prototypes with ceramic plates and tested them with electron and proton beams, achieving promising results with fluxes up to 10^6 cm^-2 s^-1. The ceramic material used is a Si3N4/SiC composite with bulk resistivities in the range of 10^9-10^10 Ωcm. The RPC prototypes have a symmetric two-gap structure and have been tested at the ELBE electron accelerator facility and the COSY proton beam facility.
