Summary

Radon-222 content in spring waters and soil was studied in the Zdolbuniv district of Rivne region, Ukraine. The average volumetric activity of radon in water samples was 8.05 ± 0.91 Bq/dm3, with values ranging from 2 to 14 Bq/dm3. 22.4% of the 58 water sources surveyed exceeded the recommended limit of 11.1 Bq/dm3. The soil near the sources had low activity for strontium-90 and cesium-137, with specific activity ranging from 6 to 30 Bq/kg. A correlation was found between soil specific activity and radon bulk activity in water. The average annual effective doses of spring water used for consumption were calculated to be 1.68 mSv/year, which does not exceed the lower limit specified by the International Commission on Radiation Protection.
