Summary

Semiconductor epitaxial alloys are crucial for optoelectronic devices, but their growth is limited by the availability of single crystal substrates. Researchers have been trying to develop defect-free crystalline substrates with tunable lattice parameters to overcome this limitation. Various approaches have been explored, including graded layers, compliant substrates, and strain relief techniques, but they often result in dislocations or film buckling. A new approach uses wafer-scale strain engineering of ultrathin semiconductor crystalline layers, enabling control of strain and lattice parameter. This technique has the potential to fabricate innovative heterostructures with tunable bandgaps and band offsets for optoelectronic devices, including solar cells with efficiencies higher than 50%.
