Summary

NREL proposes a new hot water draw specification for rating solar water heaters to eliminate bias in current ratings, which stem from unrealistic flow rates and mains inlet temperatures. The current SRCC draw specification assumes a constant daily draw profile, which is not realistic. A new draw specification is proposed, with both fixed-volume and tempered draws, to better represent realistic hot water use and mains inlet temperatures. Simulations show an average change in ratings of ~8% with the proposed draw. The new specification aims to balance realism with simplicity, reducing bias and providing more accurate performance estimates for solar water heaters.
