Summary

Red shiner, Notropis lutrensis, have been introduced to the San Joaquin Valley, California, and are spreading throughout the Valley floor, with highest densities in irrigation canals and drains, and other small, shallow, unstable aquatic habitats influenced by agricultural and human-related activities. The species is expected to eventually spread through the entire lower San Joaquin River system. Red shiner are found in areas with elevated turbidity, conductivity, total dissolved solids, total alkalinity, and total hardness, and are associated with other fish species that can tolerate harsh conditions. They are reproductively active from April to October, and their diet includes filamentous algae, aquatic insect larvae, and terrestrial ants.
