Summary

Hospitals use ethylene oxide (EtO) to sterilize moisture- and heat-sensitive instruments and glutaraldehyde as a high-level disinfectant. EtO poses health hazards, including being a known human carcinogen, and has acute and chronic health effects. Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital (MHMH) adopted two alternative technologies, Sterrad and Steris, to replace EtO. The hospital conducted a cost analysis, which showed that the capital costs for non-EtO alternatives were $297,000-$322,000, and annual operating costs were $7,800. MHMH still uses EtO for some instruments, but is collecting data to find alternative instruments that can be sterilized using non-EtO alternatives.
