Summary

The Department of Palaeontology of the University of Budapest was founded in 1882, with M. Hantken as its first professor. Hantken established the collections, which initially included 4216 items, with a focus on Tertiary foraminifers. After Hantken's death, A. Koch became the professor and organized a systematic collection of vertebrates and index fossils. The collection was later enriched by subsequent professors, including I. Lorentey and K. Telegdi-Roth. In 1972, the department acquired the palaeontological part of the material from the Department of Mineralogy and Geology of the Technical University of Budapest. The collection now contains over 800 drawers of important Tertiary and Mesozoic material from the Carpathian and Pannonian Basin, including Jurassic ammonites and Tertiary molluscs.
