Summary

The Forest Survey of India (FSI) has been assessing forest resources since 1965, and its revised mandate of 1986 requires it to assess forest cover every two years and publish the information in the "State of Forest Report" (SFR). The eighth assessment, SFR 2001, uses digital image processing techniques to assess forest cover for the entire country, with a spatial resolution of 23.5m x 23.5m and a scale of interpretation of 1:50,000. The report provides a comprehensive status of forest and tree cover in the country, including statistics and spatial information for each state, union territory, and district. The forest cover in India has been estimated to be around 19.39% of the country's geographical area, with a total forest cover of 637,293 km2. The report also highlights new features, including the use of digital methods for forest cover assessment and the provision of district-wise data on forest cover for each state and union territory.
