Summary

Wheat farmers have battled plant-killing fungi since wheat was domesticated over 10,000 years ago, with wheat black stem rust being a deadly threat to wheat harvests. A new race of the disease, Ug99, has started to spread rapidly across Africa and South Asia, overcoming existing defences and leading to devastating crop losses. To combat this, research into new wheat varieties resistant to the fungus is necessary. A project has contributed to the global effort by accelerating research on resistant wheat varieties, identifying 13 advanced lines and variety candidates from six countries, with two mutant lines validated and recognized as wheat varieties in Kenya. The project used induced mutation techniques to produce resistant wheat lines, facilitated a network of laboratories, and supported multi-location trials and quality management activities.
