Delzanno et al. (LANL) present a study of single helicity (SH) and quasi-single helicity (QSH) states in Reversed Field Pinches (RFP). They analyze cylindrical paramagnetic pinch equilibria with uniform resistivity, varying the RFP toroidal current parameter Θ. For high Θ, multiple m = 1 ideal MHD instabilities occur, with one typically nonresonant. Nonlinear evolution of these modes at low Hartmann number H reveals a new hydrodynamic instability, distinct from usual electromagnetic kink modes. This instability, driven by inward pinch flow and boundary conditions, causes total angular momentum growth. The hydrodynamic mode dominates velocity field dynamics but has minimal impact on magnetic field dynamics.
