Summary

The fourth industrial revolution is accelerating urbanization, with 1.2 million km² of new urban land expected by 2030, predominantly in Africa and Asia. Robotics and autonomous systems (RAS)—including drones, self-driving vehicles, and infrastructure repair robots—offer transformative potential for urban ecosystems but remain underexplored in their environmental impacts. A horizon scan involving 170 experts from 35 countries identified 32 opportunities and 38 challenges for urban biodiversity and ecosystems. Prioritized opportunities centered on RAS for biodiversity monitoring and ecosystem management, highlighting their capacity to revolutionize environmental data collection and species conservation. Fewer challenges received high priority, primarily concerning waste from unrecovered RAS and the quality and interpretation of RAS-collected data. The scan emphasizes that while RAS could reshape land use, transport systems, and human-nature interactions, proactive early assessment is critical to avoid detrimental consequences and fully realize ecological benefits without compromising urban sustainability.
