Summary

Researchers have discovered the secret to the durability of Roman concrete, which has survived for millennia. The key to its durability lies in the ancient manufacturing strategy of "hot mixing," where lime was used in its more reactive form, known as quicklime, to create a self-healing concrete. The quicklime reacted with water to form a calcium-saturated solution that could recrystallize as calcium carbonate and fill cracks, automatically healing them. This process, combined with the use of pozzolanic materials, gave the concrete a previously unrecognized self-healing capability. The researchers have successfully tested this mechanism by producing samples of hot-mixed concrete that healed cracks within two weeks, and are now working to commercialize this modified cement material.
