Summary

A study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison examined the effects of root zone amendments on the quality and nutritional status of creeping bentgrass putting greens. The greens were constructed with 10 different root zone mixes, and the results showed that the USGA recommendation of >85% organic matter in the root zone amendment may be too stringent for Wisconsin conditions. The putting green with the highest quality ratings had a root zone amendment containing 64% organic matter, which provided better moisture retention and reduced the risk of localized dry spot. The study found significant relationships between root zone mix organic matter content, moisture retention, and putting green quality. The choice of root zone mix amendment also affected the nutritional status of the putting greens, with differences in fertilizer nitrogen uptake and leaching. The study suggests that the USGA recommendation should be modified to allow for higher mineral content in the amendment, which could lead to improved moisture retention, putting green quality, and reduced fertilizer requirements.
