Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) is a tree that ranges throughout the eastern United States, often found in abandon fields, road sides, and dry slopes. The wood is light yellow to dark brown, ring porous, and has a distinctive odor. It has excellent machining characteristics, is relatively low in strength, and resistant to wood decay. Sassafras is used for small woodworking projects, millwork, and paneling, and is graded by the NHLA rules. The wood darkens with exposure to light and has a low volumetric shrinkage of 10.3 percent.
