Summary

Maj. Francis R. Shunk of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers studied the pressure of concrete on forms in 1908, observing that formwork pressure is a function of concrete temperature and rate of placement. He measured formwork pressure and recorded it graphically as a function of the rate of pour and concrete temperature. Later, ACI Committee 622 was formed to make recommended design assumptions for the lateral pressure of concrete on vertical formwork, considering factors such as rate of placement, consistency of concrete, weight of concrete, and temperature of the concrete mix. The committee developed an expression for maximum lateral pressure, which was later modified to include unit weight and chemistry coefficients. ACI 347-01 incorporated these coefficients, providing lateral pressure equations for columns, walls, and other cases. ACI 347-14 further qualified the use of these equations, and ACI PRC 237.2-21 addressed form pressure exerted by self-consolidating concrete, considering rheological properties such as yield stress, viscosity, and thixotropy.
