Summary

The field of science and technology studies (STS) has made a slim contribution to mainstream sociology due to a misunderstanding about providing social explanations for science and technology, which requires a deep redescription of what a social explanation is. STS argues that social sciences should not imitate natural sciences in the traditional way, but rather learn from them to become more objective and relevant in the political arena. The traditional approach to social explanation, which replaces natural objects with social functions, no longer works for hard science and technology. Instead, STS proposes to extend the research programs of social sciences beyond the traditional realm of the "social" to include natural and material objects, without taking the boundary between matter and society as a division of labor between natural and social sciences.
