Researchers developed a mathematical model to study the sounds produced by knuckle cracking, a phenomenon where the metacarpophalangeal joint produces a typical cracking sound. The model resolves the dynamics of a collapsing cavitation bubble in the synovial fluid inside the joint during an articular release. The results show that the acoustic signature from the bubble dynamics is consistent with experimental measurements, supporting the idea that cavitation bubble collapse is the source of the cracking sound. The model also suggests that only a partial collapse of the bubble is needed to replicate the observed acoustic spectra, allowing for bubbles to persist after the sound is generated.
