Summary

The European Marine Strategy Framework Directive requires maintaining marine waters in "Good Environmental Status". The "Sea-floor Integrity" descriptor is defined as ensuring the structure and functions of ecosystems are safeguarded and benthic ecosystems are not adversely affected. Experts identified 8 seabed attributes to meet the directive's requirements: substratum, bioengineers, oxygen concentration, contaminants, species composition, size distribution, trophodynamics, and energy flow. "Good Environmental Status" is not exclusively "pristine" but rather when all uses' impacts are sustainable, with ecosystem components retaining natural diversity and productivity, and rapid recovery from perturbations. The European Commission selected indicators for Sea-floor Integrity, including biogenic substrate, extent of seabed affected by human activities, sensitive species presence, and multi-metric indices assessing benthic community condition.
