Summary

This study investigated the incorporation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from seawater into newly formed sea ice. Enrichment factors (EFs) were calculated and found to be generally >1, varying for different DOM fractions, with the lowest EFs for humic-like DOM (1.0-1.39) and highest for amino acid-like DOM (1.10-3.94). Enrichment was highest in frost flowers and lower in bulk ice and brine. The results suggest that DOM is incorporated into sea ice more than inorganic solutes during initial formation, and the degree of enrichment depends on the chemical composition of DOM.
