Summary

Researchers analyzed seismic signals in two spalacid rodents, the giant root-rat and the Gansu zokor, which produce signals by head-thumping, likely evolved from soil tampering. The giant root-rat's signal contains 5.51±1.60 pulses with an inter-pulse distance of 0.11±0.01s, while the Gansu zokor's signal has 6.90±2.33 pulses and an inter-pulse distance of 0.13±0.01s. Both species produce signals during peak activity, likely for territorial advertisement, and the signals can be considered species-specific.
