Summary

The Federal Republic of Germany proposes the inclusion of Pseudoscaphirhynchus hermanni, the Small Amu-Dar shovelnose, in Appendix II of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals. The species is endemic to the Amu Darya River, is considered extremely rare, and has been classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. The main threats to its survival are habitat destruction due to irrigation systems for the cotton industry, water pollution, and salination. The species' population and migration patterns are not well understood, but it is believed to cross national boundaries between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan during its cyclical migration to spawning grounds.
