The enamel structure in the canine teeth of the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) has a unique microstructure, with intensified folding of Hunter-Schreger bands (HSB) in the anterolabial enamel, which increases its resistance to fracture under vertical tensile stresses. Finite element modeling and premortem cracks confirm that the highest tensile stresses occur in this region. The enamel's structure is specialized to withstand the high stresses associated with bone-eating behavior, and is distinct from that of other carnivores, such as the cougar (Puma concolor). The study suggests that the evolution of this specialized enamel structure is related to the high stress intensity experienced by hyenas during bone fracturing.
