Summary

The 5th Social Media Mining for Health Applications (#SMM4H) shared tasks aimed to advance Twitter data utilization for pharmacovigilance, toxicovigilance, and epidemiology of birth defects. Five tasks were included: automatic classification of tweets mentioning medications, classification of multilingual tweets reporting adverse effects, extraction and normalization of adverse effects in English tweets, characterization of chatter related to prescription medication abuse, and classification of tweets self-reporting birth defect pregnancy outcomes. 29 teams submitted 130 system submissions, with tasks requiring binary classification, multi-class classification, and named entity recognition.
