The project aims to develop socially intelligent computing to support citizen science, with goals to understand conditions for enabling citizen science, generate new models, and develop/test systems reflecting human cognitive and social abilities. The project plan involves surveying and studying citizen science websites, developing systems, and deploying/evaluating them. Findings from year 1 case studies show a wide range of functionality, need to satisfy and motivate users, and little use of games. Research questions focus on task design, data quality, and user motivation, with system design investigating classification of species from photographs, including tool-like and game-like systems such as Hunt-and-Gather, Happy Match, and Forgotten Island. The current status includes completed Amazon Mechanical Turk trials and ongoing system development and deployment.
