Summary

The project aimed to create a sustainable vessel that harnesses solar energy through photovoltaic panels to propel itself. This report outlines the literature review on boat hull designs, solar power systems, and relevant engineering principles. It then presents the design process, material selection, system evaluation, and performance testing of our model.

1. Introduction and Background

The Solar Boat Project is a collaborative engineering endeavor involving three to four students tasked with designing, building, and competing a solar-powered boat in the Victorian Solar Boat Race. This event, held at Science Works during October's Victorian Solar Race, challenges teams to build and race innovative solar boats while adhering to specific rules and regulations.

Solar boats represent an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional watercraft, leveraging renewable energy sources for propulsion. They operate using photovoltaic (PV) panels that convert sunlight into electrical energy, powering electric motors connected to a propeller for forward motion. This report analyzes the design considerations, technical implementation, and performance of our solar boat prototype.

2. Literature Review

2.1 Boat Hull (Main Body):

The hull, the watertight body of a ship, plays a crucial role in a solar boat's performance. Its design varies based on desired speed and stability:

Stable Boats: For stable operation in calm waters, a wider, flatter bottom provides greater contact area with water, enhancing stability.

Fast Boats: Narrower, deeper hulls reduce drag, enabling higher speeds. However, they offer less stability.

Our design considered both factors, aiming for a balance between speed and stability suitable for the race's requirements.

2.2 Solar Power: Background

Solar power harnesses sunlight through photovoltaic (PV) cells, which convert solar radiation into direct current (DC) electrical energy. This DC power is then used to drive electric motors connected to the boat’s propeller.

2.3 Photoelectric Effect:

The photoelectric effect explains how PV cells generate electricity when exposed to light. When photons from sunlight strike the cell, they transfer their energy to electrons within the material, freeing them and creating a flow of electric current.

3. Design and Construction

Our solar boat design incorporated several key components:

Hull: A flat-bottomed hull constructed from lightweight materials like foam core and fiberglass offered stability and ease of construction.

Solar Panels: High-efficiency PV panels sourced from Swinburne University Library provided the primary power source.

Motor and Drive Shaft: A DC electric motor powered by the solar panels was connected to a drive shaft, transferring rotational motion to the propeller.

Propeller: A three-bladed propeller optimized for efficient water propulsion was strategically positioned at the boat’s rear.

Circuit Board and On/Off Switch: A circuit board regulated power distribution from the solar panels to the motor while an on/off switch enabled control over the boat's operation.

4. System Evaluation and Performance Testing

The completed solar boat underwent rigorous testing to evaluate its performance:

Buoyancy Force vs. Weight: The boat’s buoyancy was sufficient to keep it afloat, exceeding the required depth of (275-325 cm) while maintaining stability.

House of Quality Analysis: This analysis helped identify and prioritize design considerations based on performance criteria like speed, efficiency, and cost.

Concept Generation and Selection: Several design iterations were explored before settling on a final concept that balanced speed, stability, and material availability.

5. Conclusions and Recommendations

The Solar Boat Project successfully designed, built, and tested a competitive solar-powered vessel. The team learned valuable engineering principles related to boat design, solar energy conversion, and electrical systems integration. Future improvements could focus on optimizing the hull shape for higher speed, exploring more efficient PV panel arrangements, and refining the motor and propeller system for enhanced performance.

Description

This final report details the design and mechanical system of a solar boat, exploring various hull types for optimal performance. The project, led by Dan Cabral, Chin Yew Lim, Hoh Wei Sen, and Johnson Nguyen, aims to advance sustainable marine technology.
