Summary

Research by the Space & Atmospheric Electricity group at the University of Reading has shown that high-speed solar wind streams can modulate lightning rates across Europe, with the magnetic polarity of the solar wind playing a role. The exact mechanism is unknown, but it may involve the modulation of galactic cosmic rays by the heliospheric magnetic field or energetic particles within the solar wind. Lightning forms part of the Global Electric Circuit, with thunderstorms acting like a battery and transferring charge from the Earth's surface to the lower ionosphere. The passage of a high-speed solar wind stream can increase the observed lightning rate by as much as 30%, and this information could potentially help in forecasting the severity of lightning storms. A PhD project is available to investigate the mechanisms involved and determine the global extent of the effects, with opportunities for training and collaboration with international scientists.
