Summary

Polychlorierte Biphenyle (PCB) sind giftige, organische Chlorverbindungen, die bis in die 1980er Jahre als Isolier- und Kühlflüssigkeit, Hydraulikflüssigkeit und in anderen Anwendungen eingesetzt wurden. Sie sind persistent, reichern sich in der Nahrungskette an und gelten als gesundheitsgefährdend. In der Schweiz trat 1986 ein generelles PCB-Verbot in Kraft, und 2001 wurden PCBs im Stockholmer Übereinkommen über persistente organische Schadstoffe (POP-Konvention) weltweit geächtet. Die erlaubten Konzentrationen von PCBs werden in verschiedenen gesetzlichen Bereichen geregelt, wie in Lebensmitteln, Futtermitteln, Altlasten, Böden und Abfällen. Es gibt 209 mögliche verschiedene Formen (Kongenere) von PCBs, die in dioxinähnliche und nicht dioxinähnliche PCBs unterteilt werden.
