Cooper, Ivan P. Savov, and Graeme T. Swindles, tested ten samples of volcanic glasses from basalt to rhyolite using three common extraction methods: acid digestion (HCl, HNO3, H2SO4), base digestion (KOH), and density separation. The major element geochemistry of each sample was analyzed and compared to a control group. Key findings include:

- Basaltic and andesitic glasses are highly susceptible to chemical alteration, especially to concentrated corrosive materials used in acid and base digestion techniques.
