Summary

Water hyacinth plants from the Paraíba do Sul river and Imbé river in Brazil were studied to evaluate the effects of anthropogenic stress on their structural and ecophysiological characteristics. Plants from more industrialized and populated regions showed lower turgid cell in the root cortex, less root hairs and leaf epidermis, and increased stroma volume. Higher concentrations of metals were observed in the roots of plants from these regions. Despite these changes, the plants maintained their maximum quantum yield, suggesting metabolic fitting and increased non-photochemical quenching. The results indicate that water hyacinth plants can adapt to stressful conditions, but with structural modifications.
