Summary

The Studfold Community Nature Project, a 3-year Heritage Lottery-funded project, is studying the history and wildlife of Studfold Farm in upper Nidderdale, North Yorkshire. The project is investigating the interaction between plants, wildlife, and land use on the 80-hectare site, which includes meadowland, pasture, and areas of limestone and gritstone. As part of the project, bryophytes are being recorded using 50-m squares, with 212 species found so far. The survey has revealed a kaleidoscope of distributional patterns, with some species being predictable and others appearing unexpectedly. The project has also highlighted the lack of scarce species on the site, suggesting it is a rather degraded landscape. Despite this, the survey has shown that even a relatively ordinary site can have a high level of species diversity, with 294 squares surveyed and 64% yielding half a dozen or less species. The two richest squares contain 109 species between them, due to different factors such as habitat stability and man-made microhabitats.
