Ayahuasca, a tea from the Amazon, induces altered states of consciousness with perceptual alterations and has been suggested as a potential model of psychosis. A study assessed cerebral blood flow changes and brain activity modulation during a verbal fluency task after Ayahuasca intake in healthy volunteers. Results showed activation of frontal and temporal cortex and limbic areas, decreased cerebral blood flow in the right cerebellar hemisphere, and decreased activation of language processing areas, similar to alterations seen in psychotic disorders. The study suggests Ayahuasca's modulation of brain activity is useful for studying psychosis neurobiology, despite differences between psychosis and the Ayahuasca-induced state.
