Summary

In the 2013/2014 season, 82% (145 out of 176) of sunflower seed samples were graded as FH1, a similar rate to the previous season's 80%. However, 31 samples were downgraded to COSF (Class Other Sunflower Seed). The main reasons for downgrades included:

- High percentages of screenings (16 samples) exceeding the maximum permissible deviation of 4%.
- Foreign matter content (5 samples) surpassing the 4% limit.
- Sclerotinia presence (8 samples) exceeding 4% or in combination with collective deviations up to 6%. Most of these were from North West province, with one from Mpumalanga.
- Other reasons for downgrades included a mix of factors like damaged sunflower seeds and collective deviations.

Gauteng had the highest average screening percentage (2.01%), while Mpumalanga reported the lowest at 0.82%. Foreign matter averages were highest in Gauteng (1.63%) and lowest in Limpopo (0.89%). Graph 16 illustrates the average percentage screenings per province over the two seasons, showing consistent trends.
