Summary

Superassociations are large complexes found in distant galaxies, similar to ordinary O-associations but larger and more luminous. The 30 Doradus complex in the Large Magellanic Cloud is an example, with an absolute brightness of -15m.0 and a diameter of 600 pc, making it 100 times more luminous than ordinary associations. A study of 55 galaxies, mostly of type Sc, found superassociations in 14 of them, with concentrations exceeding -13m.5 in absolute magnitude considered as superassociations. The data suggests that superassociations are found particularly often in supergiant galaxies with an absolute magnitude of -20m.5 and above. The lifetime of superassociations is estimated to be at least 6 × 10^7 years, which is nearly one order of magnitude more than the age of ordinary O-associations and hot supergiants. This suggests that the blue supergiants observed in superassociations represent only one of the numerous generations of these objects, and that hundreds of thousands of stars may be formed in these complexes.
